The Rich Girls Are Weeping

07 July 2006

Shocking! New! Exciting! Tracks! For! Your! Friday! Dancing! Needs! (Well, new to me, anyway...) This post is guaranteed not to contain any unpopular opinions or digs on early-twenty-something boys with fragile egos. Collected hither and yon, the best of what I've come across this week in the grooveabilty department.

Captain Murphy -- I Belong To The Girls

Swedish blues-y glam rock.
You guys! SWEDISH BLUES-Y GLAM ROCK. Needless to say, I can't stop listening to this.

Alexander Robotnick -- The Dark Side of the Spoon

It's not every day that you hear a seminal piece of electronica for the first time, you know. It's like that time Pinkie made me listen to E2-E4 and I was transfixed for an hour, which is pretty freakin' rare, if you must know. BTW, Alexander Robotnik (aka Italian producer Maurizio Dami) recorded this in 1982, people -- which is really, really mindbogglingly neat, as it sounds more fresh and modern than half the stuff I listen to nowadays. Put "Dark Side of the Spoon" on and just try not to a) be completely blown away by its amazingness or b) do a dumb little dance with yourself. This is from a vinyl-only release that also contains two very nice remixes from Lindstrom & Prins Thomas and Bangkok Impact.

Kaiser Chiefs and Boyz Noise -- Every Day I Love You Less and Less

Look, I don't really understand how a Boyz Noise track is a remake and not a remix, but I'll leave these things to the professionals and just stand over here and look cute.

Mylo vs. Kim Carnes -- Bette Davis Arms

This is a bit more straightforward mashup, no confusion necessary. And it's totally fun. As an accompaniment, check out Party Ben's Mylo & Miami Sound Machine mashup -- or you know, that Phil n' Dog one (which of course I can't find a working link to...)

James Figurine -- You Again (w/ Jenny Lewis)

And one to chill out with with... I'm not sure how I feel about the entirety of Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake (which, if you say it out loud, sounds like you're trying, badly, to sing Pulp's "Mis-shapes" or something...), the new one from James Figurine (aka Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel and The Postal Service), but this track is lovely. Heck, I probably won't get around to writing about it because James at Grean Pea-ness kind of covered everything already, except for that part about the Guillemots writing like, good songs, which I totally don't agree with.

Weekend news: Cue tonight at Hole in the Wall; birthday parties (2!) Saturday night means that we won't be putting in an appearance at the giant extravaganza @ Emo's, starring Sound Team (heh!) and a whole mess of other local bands of note, nor at the Cut Chemist activities at Waterloo Park.
