The Rich Girls Are Weeping

17 January 2007

As you know, from time to time, Cindy or I may pose you--the reader--a question; answers to which may inform us of your coolness and of places where she or I may need to be. No, we don't want the phone number for Milk & Honey. What we--well, I, speaking specifically--want is to know if where, if anywhere, in our fair city there is cabaret going down. Not jazz revues, not simple drag revues (though we like those too), not burlesque, but straight up cabaret. Torchsongs, dancing, depravity...just like Liza brought it in everyone's favorite musical about the Weimarer Republik. And, well, Milk & Honey quality cocktails and boys in dashing menswear. You a Bellmer Dolls show with a chorus line. (For the record, that was Cindy rather than myself who described the Interpol live experience as "porn directed by Leni Riefenstahl.") All cabaret tipsters email your top sekrit answers to elegantfaker at gmail dot com.

ETA: Cafe Carlyle is a little bit beyond the reach of the TRGAW budget. I'll put that on my Christmas 2007 wishlist. Right next to that other thing... Also, this is the best set of tags. Ever.

Thank you. In other other related news, go see Glitter and Doom at the Met.

Unfortunately, it would seem that Ute Lemper's American Songbook show at Lincoln Center is as sold out as Neko Case's. (Sidebar: Tickets remain for The Cherryholmes, though -- but that is a lot of bluegrass for one night...)

Relatedly, Don't Tell Mama occassionally has interesting acts -- for instance, this Friday is Micaela Leon. I think she might fit the bill for what you're looking for!

No bluegrass. I want brilliantine and banana skirts.

I warned you that aside was unrelated! (;

Seriously, though, if Ute Lemper's ever at the Cafe Carlyle again, we totes need to go. She's awesome.

Wow. More Italian porn spam.

Uh...I think Micaela Leon might be the ticket. Who is she, and what is she doing with my hair? Think we can make her show, the Wrenzez, AND the Bellmer Dolls on Friday? I'm all for it.

I deleted it this time. :P

We cannot do three shows in one night! We'd need a limo for that, as we're not driving anymore. (;

And yes, she's totally got your hair. Ya'll can swap 'do tips.

We can totes do three shows! Remember that night that we saw WMMF in Brooklyn, THR in Manhattan, and almost went back to Brooklyn to see Annie?! Quitter. =P

Besides, I've already booked a table, and you're bugging me about drycleaning.

Oh, you're so right.

But we DEFINITELY cannot also go to Weimar New York, which is at 11:30 at Joe's Pub, unless we only watch approx. 3 minutes of the Bellmer Dolls' set and run all the way up Bowery and 4th Ave. to Joe's Pub, which, admittedly, isn't all that far. (;

The Neue Galerie does a cabaret series that's very good. Ute Lemper performs there at least twice a year, so do Daniel Isengart, Theo Bleckmann, Marta Eggerth, KT Sullivan, et al.

They don't have much info about it on their website, but if you e-mail them at, they'll send you their schedule
